Chikal Kalo literally means 'playing in mud'. Unique to the village of Marcel,
Chikhal Kalo is a local Goan festival – one of the many that you see only in Goa.
It is celebrated on the 12th day of the month of ‘Aashadi Ekadashi’ which roughly falls in the 2nd or 3rd week of July. Chikhal kalo is celebrated as a
sign of gratitude to the baby lord Krishna.
Chikhal kalo is performed in front of the Shree Devaki Krishna temple, Marcel. It is a unique temple because it is the only temple which is dedicated to the mother-son duo, Devaki and Krishna, not only in Goa, but in the whole of India.
